Even as Maryland begins to reopen, many social distancing measures remain in effect, and many businesses and attractions remain closed. But there are still plenty of ways to get out and have some fun! Here are some new things to do outside in the Crofton area this summer.
Stay Entertained with These Outdoor Activities
The Crofton/Annapolis/Baltimore area is filled with amazing parks, trails, and outdoor areas, but you can also find plenty of fun right in your own backyard! Here are some unique things to do outside with friends and family.
Work on your garden
Gardening is a relaxing and very rewarding activity. Spend a little time weeding, mulching, planting, and watering, and you’ll transform your yard into a colorful oasis.
Explore your town
How well do you know your town? Pick an area or a spot you aren’t as familiar with and take a walking tour to get to know it a little better.
Pack a picnic
Head outside and have lunch in the great outdoors! Make up some sandwiches and snacks, pack up some drinks, and bring your meal into nature. For something easy and simple, unpack in the backyard. For a little more adventure, try out a new park in the area.
Camp in the backyard
Take a break from the norm and spend a little time outside with a backyard camping excursion. If your neighborhood permits it, build a fire, roast marshmallows, or even cook dinner under the stars. Then wake up to early-morning birdsong in the first light of dawn.
Discover a new trail
Whether or not you’re an avid hiker, finding a new trail can be a much-needed break from the everyday routine. It doesn’t need to be anything too rigorous or extreme if you’re just looking to spend a little time in nature, but a challenging hike is a great way to get some exercise!
In the Crofton area, you can find fantastic hiking at Patapsco Valley State Park and Gunpowder Falls State Park.
Create a scavenger hunt
Gather some friends (or some kids), and start your own scavenger hunt. Create a list, set your boundaries, and start hunting! If you live in a more rural area or have a large yard, you might want to make it a nature hunt, otherwise, make a list of things to find in town, like a model of car, a specific state’s license plate, or something else entirely. Have each team post a picture and tag it with a special hashtag when an item is found.
Create a DIY drive-in or outdoor movie
Drive-in movies are fun and social-distancing-friendly! Unfortunately, drive-ins have largely become a thing of the past, but with a little time and effort, you can create one of your own. All it takes is a projector, something to project onto (like a white wall, sheet, or tarp), and some speakers. If you’re savvy, you could also use an FM transmitter to broadcast the sound onto your car’s radio.
Fly a kite
If that’s all too complicated, keep it simple and timeless instead. Head out to the local park on a breezy day to partake in an activity that’s been a favorite for decades.
