We’ve had a pretty unconventional few months here in Crofton! As we continue to navigate business closures and social distancing measures, you may be wondering how to make the most of the last few weeks of summer. Fortunately, our community is home to plenty of top attractions—and I’m sharing a few of my favorites.
5 Summer Activities Near Crofton You Won’t Want to Miss
No matter what your idea of fun looks like, you should always stay safe and maintain at least six feet of social distance between yourself and others. Don’t forget to follow local mask mandates, too—they’re required by the state of Maryland!
So without further ado, here’s my round-up of the most exciting (and safest) activities around Crofton that are definitely worth checking out.
Trek through Patuxent Research Refuge
Want to get in touch with nature? The Patuxent Research Refuge was founded in 1936 by President Roosevelt, and today, it remains a top spot for anyone seeking some outdoor fun. Although it’s primarily used for wildlife research, visitors can hunt, fish, and hike throughout the Refuge’s 12,800 acres. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a bald eagle!
Take a day trip to the Chesapeake
For those looking to get away for a while, consider exploring some of Maryland’s serene coastline along the Chesapeake Bay. Annapolis, Highland Beach, and Kent Island are just a few of our state’s charming bayside communities, and they’re all less than an hour drive from Crofton.
The Chesapeake truly offers something for everyone. Here, you can swim, sample delicious seafood, explore historic communities, or just relax on the peaceful shores.
Explore the Colonial Annapolis Historic District
If you only visit one town on the Chesapeake, it should be Annapolis. Known as America’s sailing capital and the capital of Maryland, this historic city is just 24 minutes from Crofton. That makes it perfect for a quick getaway!
One of Annapolis’s top attractions is its sprawling Colonial Historic District, which showcases some of America’s oldest architecture and businesses. Stroll along brick streets, sample a famous lobster roll from Mason’s, or check out the local museum—it’s all up to you.
Test your skills at the Crofton Go Kart Raceway
Drivers of all ages can race Formula 1-style cars at the Crofton Go Kart Raceway. This challenging half mile course features 27 twists and turns, and they also offer socially distanced races for groups. If you have young children that aren’t eligible to drive on their own, they can still ride along with you in their double-style karts.
Sample local pints from Chesepiooc Real Ale Brewery
Named after the Algonquian word for “village at a big river,” Chesepiooc Real Ale Brewery crafts some of the most unconventional pints in town. Their small batch beers range from IPAs to cinnamon-vanilla white stouts, so you never know what you may find in your glass.
Currently, Chesepiooc is open with limited indoor and outdoor seating. And if you want to enjoy their brews at home, you can even join their Growler Club.
